Typing to Communicate!

Typing offers a wonderful avenue for all of us to communicate!  As we email our family and friends, for instance, we supplement our oral communication (on the phone, face-to-face), and, in some cases, use it exclusively (with our friends far away, for instance).

Typing is a wonderful "augmentative" way for kids to communicate too... especially, when they are in their developing years, and working on making their speech clearer, more accessible, and more fluent!

Typing offers great potential for academic work, sharing thoughts, making needs known, and expressing emotions.  Familiarity with a computer keyboard is a useful like skill for everyone!

Sometimes, typing is easier for kids than speaking; sometimes it will be easier... but not yet!

That's where typing training fits in!!
At each stage of independence: facilitated pointing (moving against mild physical resistance), mildly facilitated typing, and independent word processing, graphic communication plays a vital role in children's overall communication!  Starting with pointing to letters, moving to forming words and sentences on a letter board, and eventually, creating written documents on a computer, typing can be learned in a natural progression... from assisted, to mildly assisted, to gradually independent to fully independent!

Here's how...

* Call us for a free consult!  Call Marge at 278-9161 or Laura at
273-5595, and talk about an informal assessment for your child.

*Schedule a free, informal, play assessment for your child.  This will occur either in your home or in one of our play rooms, with one or two of us available to play and observe.  We will get to know your child well enough to schedule a formal assessment.

* Schedule a formal assessment, where one or two of us will assess your child's readiness for tying training.  The assessment will typically be two one-hour sessions, and will include assessment of communicative, physical, and academic readiness.  It will include recommendations for further assessment and/or training, and cost $150.

* Schedule typing training!  This can be accomplished along with another on-going therapy (Speech and Language, Physical Therapy) or as a separate training.  The cost will be $75 per hour, and may be split into several shorter sessions (e.g., 1 minutes once/month)
